Genicular Nerve Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
An outpatient procedure that uses controlled radio waves to disable the small sensory nerves carrying pain signals away from the knee. We confirm the target nerves with diagnostic blocks first; if those blocks produce strong (even if brief) relief, RFA can extend that relief for 9–18 months. Best for: Patients with knee arthritis pain who responded to a genicular nerve block. Often used as a bridge to delay replacement, or as long-term management for patients who can’t have surgery.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
Concentrated growth factors and platelets from your own blood are injected into the knee joint to reduce inflammation and support tissue health. PRP has been studied extensively over the past decade. Best for: Mild-to-moderate knee arthritis, early degenerative changes, or patients who want a regenerative approach before more invasive options. Several treatments may be needed; results vary by patient and disease severity.
Image-Guided Corticosteroid & Hyaluronic Acid Injections
The longest-established option. Steroid injections reduce inflammation rapidly; hyaluronic acid (“gel”) injections add lubrication and may extend the comfortable interval. Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS)
A small device placed near the genicular nerves delivers gentle electrical signals to interrupt pain transmission. Best for: Refractory knee pain or post-surgical knee pain.

Can GAE actually delay or replace knee surgery?
For many patients, yes — at least for a meaningful time. The 2024 IDE trial published in JVIR showed sustained 2-year relief in moderate-to-severe knee OA. GAE doesn’t restore cartilage, but it can substantially reduce the pain-driving inflammation in the joint.
Is GAE covered by insurance?
Coverage is improving but still varies by plan. We verify benefits before scheduling and obtain prior authorization when required.
How long does genicular RFA last?
Typically 9–18 months. The procedure can be repeated when pain returns. Many patients use RFA as a bridge while continuing to evaluate replacement timing.
Will PRP regenerate my cartilage?
No treatment regenerates significant cartilage in advanced osteoarthritis. PRP reduces inflammation and may slow degenerative progression. The expectation should be pain reduction and functional improvement, not cartilage restoration.
Do I need an MRI before treatment?
Not always. Standing knee X-rays plus a thorough exam are often enough to make a plan. MRI may be needed for specific questions like meniscus tears or post-surgical anatomy.
